Vintage or antique solid sterling silver medium-sized but fine detailed (approx. 1 1/8″ tall with bale and jump ring; weight approx. 1.2 g) Crucifix pendant featuring Slavonic Orthodox iconic design with sacred images of the Crucified Savior, the six-winged Seraph above His head, the skull (Adam’s head) below the Savior’s Cross, and Holy Guardian Angel with a prayer on the reverse. The pendant has a punch-style silver mark on the necklace bale loop (highlighted on a photograph). In addition, it was tested positive for the ”sterling” purity of silver. The item has vintage or antique appearance with signs of aging and wear that might include diminished quality of the artwork, deformations of its original shape, scratches, dents, and patches of discoloration/patina. Most of the original patina has been removed using gentle cleaning and polishing. The size and weight of the item are shown on the photographs for this listing. The obverse displays an image of the Crucifixion recreated according to the ancient Orthodox iconographic tradition. The Savior is depicted with a large cruciform halo around His head crucified on the three-bar Suppedaneum cross that is venerated as the True Savior’s Cross in the Slavonic Orthodox and some Eastern Catholic churches. Such a cross has three horizontal crossbeams: the top one represents the ”INRI” nameplate, and the bottom one, a footrest. The footrest crossbeam is depicted pointing up, toward Heaven, on Christ’s right hand side where the Penitent thief, St. Dismas was crucified. The top end of the vertical crossbar of the pendant shows a larger image of a six-winged Seraph, the highest angelic being with a fiery passion for doing God’s works, symbolizing the Gates of Heaven opened by the Savior’s Cross.The left and right wider ends of the horizontal crossbar bear Sacred Name of Jesus Christ inscribed as the ”IC XC” Greek Christogram, the ”IC” on the left, and the ”XC” on the right. The space within the horizontal crossbar of the pendant around Christ’s arms is filled with text in abbreviated Church Slavonic meaning ”KING OF GLORY” (top) and ”SON OF GOD” (bottom).The bottom end of the vertical crossbar of the pendant shows a symbolic image of the skull, or Adam’s head, buried in a cave below the Savior’s Cross. It refers to Golgotha (Calvary), the elevated site where Jesus was crucified, which the Bible says means ”the place of the skull” in Hebrew. The skull is marked with two Cyrillic letters, ”Г” and ”A” next to it, an abbreviation meaning ”Head of Adam”. An ancient tradition of the Church held that it was also the burial place of Adam, thus also symbolizing the ultimate victory of Christ over sin and death. The reverse bears an image of Holy Guardian Angel holding a Cross and a sword. The image is framed with inscription of a prayer in abbreviated Church Slavonic translating: ”HOLY GUARDIAN ANGEL, PRAY TO GOD FOR ME”. According to ancient tradition, a Guardian Angel is an angel that is assigned to protect and guide a particular person, group, kingdom, or country. The concept of guardian angels also has deep Scriptural roots: “The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.” (Psalm 34 of David). Belief in both the East and the West is that guardian angels serve to protect whichever person God assigns them to, and to present prayer to God on that person’s behalf.
