The Torrington Diaries: Containing the Tours Through England and Wales of the Hon. John Byng (later Fifth Viscount Torrington) Between the Years 1781 and 1794, Four Volumes Edited by C. Bruyn Andrews Henry Holt and Company New York 1935-1938 Edited with an Introduction by C. Bruyn Edwards and with a General Introduction by Lord Beresford. Volumes Two, Three and Four each bear the black and white illustrated bookplate of Arthur W. Silver on the front fixed endpaper. Volume 1 does not have a bookplate. Dr. Arthur Wistar Silver (c. 1906-1988), a staunch and extremely active Quaker, received his undergraduate education at Haverford College and earned a Ph.D. in English history at Harvard. He taught at several universities, but most notably at Temple University in Philadelphia (beginning in 1946) and split his homes between Philadelphia and Bass Harbor, Maine. He published with Manchester University Press in 1966 Manchester Men and Indian Cotton, 1847-1872. The titlepage of Volume Two is inscribed, possibly by Dr. Silver: ”Arthur Bryant 1954 single volume edition of this 30/ [shillings]”. This comment refers to the single-volume abridged edition of the four volumes, edited by noted English historian Arthur Bryant in 1954 and published by Eyre & Spottiswoode, Limited, of London. Why Dr. Silver wrote the comment on Volume Two is unclear. Each volume measures 22.5 cm. (8.75 inches) and each is bound in red cloth with green-stamped spine title and blind-stamped publisher’s logo on the front cover. No dust jackets. Each volume includes Editor’s Notes and Volume 4 contains the General Index.. Each volume is paginated individually and with varying numbers of illustrations as follows: Volume One: lii, [2], 382 p.: frontispiece, one folded genealogical chart, 10 plates, and 13 in-text illustrations. Volume Two: x, 420 p.: frontispiece, 15 plates containing 29 illustrations, and 32 in-text illustrations. Volume Three: xii, 326 p.: frontispiece,10 plates containing 15 illustrations, and 31 in-text illustrations. Volume Four: xi, [5], 274 p.: frontispiece, 30 plates containing 39 illustrations, and 36 in-text illustrations. First American Edition. ”The Diary of the Hon. John Byng, afterwards fifth Viscount Torrington, makes an important, and in many ways, unique addition to Eighteenth Century Annals. Born of an illustrious naval family, the grandson of the famous Viscount, the great Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty, and nephew of the less fortunate Admiral -who was executed, with doubtful justice, at Portsmouth, his Diary would on that account alone demand attention. But apart from any family tradition, it has on its own merits a most enviable position in the world of letters. There is no false air of importance about it. Volume Two is in Very Good Condition: complete with all plates; pages bright, clean, tight, and unmarked; the front matter, frontispiece, titlepage and first 8 pages with upper corner crease, several of which are prevented from further damage or tearing by Neschen Filmoplast archival transparent special paper for invisible mending of tears. No loss of text from the creasing. Spine sunned with title faded. Overall, a fine, scarce four-volume set.
