Opera History: Program Cover SIGNED Frances Alda, Giovanni Martinelli, Maria Jeritza For the opera aficionado: a program cover circa 1946 autographed by three opera stars: Frances Alda, Giovanni Martinelli, and Maria Jeritza. Condition: The program cover contains a picture of Giuseppe De Luca, although it is not signed by him. The program cover measures slightly under 6″ x 8″. It is glued to a page of lined paper measuring about 6 3/4″ x 8 1/2″. The page with the program cover appears to have been taken from the scrapbook of an opera fan. There is a note on the lined paper below the program cover stating: ”His [presumably De Luca’s] autograph in Gioconda’s Libretto” but we do not have the said libretto. Affixed to the back of the page is a seemingly unrelated program from a concert by baritone Walter Cassel with piano accompanist Stanton Carter. That program contains a handwritten date of 13 Fevrier 1946 but no signatures. Also included with the group of papers are two articles clipped from newspapers: Large Audience Hears Baritone (relating to the Walter Cassel concert), and Jeritza Sings in Carnegie. There are two handwritten notes on the Jeritza article: ”I did not go but wish I did!” and, at the bottom, ”29 Avril 1946.” Frances Davis Alda (1879 – 1952) was a New Zealand-born, Australian-raised operatic lyric soprano. She achieved fame during the first three decades of the 20th century due to her outstanding singing voice, fine technique and colourful personality, as well as her frequent onstage partnerships at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, with Enrico Caruso. Giovanni Martinelli (1885 – 1969) was an Italian operatic spinto tenor. He was associated with the Italian lyric-dramatic repertory, although he performed French operatic roles to great acclaim as well. Martinelli was one of the most famous tenors of the 20th century, enjoying a long career at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and appearing at other major international theatres. Maria Jeritza (1887 – 1982) was a dramatic soprano, long associated with the Vienna State Opera (1912–1934 and 1950-1953) and the Metropolitan Opera (1921–1932 and 1951).
