Oban Scotland View From The South West 1900 Antique Print A black & white print, rescued from a disbound book from 1900 called Round Our Coasts, with another picture on the reverse side. Suitable for framing, the average page size including text is approx 12″ x 9.25″ or 30cm x 23.5cm. Actual picture size is approx 10″ x 7″ or 25.5cm x 17.5cm. This is an antique print not a modern copy and can show signs of age or previous use commensurate with the age of the print. Please view any scans as they form part of the description. Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) OBAN This pleasantly situated little town, whose name in Gaelic signifies ”the little bay,” is spread along the shore of its bay and scattered about the heights. It has been nicknamed the ”Charing Cross of the Highlands,” and indeed, the name is not inapt, for in summer it is a bustling place and travellers are constantly arriving and departing by rail, steamer and yacht The bay is shut off from the Firth of Lorne by the low island of Kerrera, behind which rises the Island of Mull with its fine mountains, and, busy with shipping, presents a lively scene in fine weather. This rendezvous of the Western Highlands is a centre for numberless excursions by road and sea. There are many steamer trips in all directions and for varying lengths of time. Glasgow, for instance, can be reached daily, via the Crinan Canal, or weekly round the Mull of Kintyre; Inverness daily, via Ballachulish, Fort William and the Caledonian Canal; and twice daily to Tobermory, on the Island of Mull, passing through the Sound of Mull. Coming nearer home there is a pleasant drive along the shore to Ganavan Sands and Bathing Place. Dunolly Castle (12th cent.), at the north end of the bay, of which the sole remains are a square tower and dungeon and part of the enclosing wall, is situated on the steep knoll overlooking the sea. This ancient fortress was originally protected by a moat on the landward side, and belonged to the Macdougalls, Lords of Lorn. The ”Brooch of Lorn,” torn from Bruce in the Battle of Dairigh, 1306, is preserved by their descendants. A remarkable building, which is a copy of the Coliseum in Rome, is shown in the picture on a hill behind the town.
