MARC DAVIS COLLECTORS SOCIETY Chanticleer Matador Disney Animation Crew 1998 Treasures from a Retired Disney Animation Crew Member … presented exclusively by Saturday’s Toys Item: Authorized Print by Disney Legend, Marc Davis (1913 – 2000) Date: 1998 / 1999 Artist: Marc Davis Description: Features an unnumbered print from the Marc Davis concept sketch in development of his ”Chanticleer” matador (unfinished Disney animation project). In Marc’s later years, plans were laid for him to sign several projects then in development, including this early sketch of his ”Chanticleer” matador. Originally developed from the late 1930’s through the 1960’s, ”Chanticleer” was one of the projects that Marc was never able to complete. As such, while the imprinted signature is truly that of Marc Davis, it was offered only in facsimile form. As printed, the offerings of this illustration were created in a debossed format (with illustration impressed slightly below the surface of the high-quality archival paper). This print was originally intended for the ”Marc Davis Collectors Society” when it was offered to a group of founding members in 1998 / 1999 (limited to 5,000 members worldwide). The intent of the program was to offer select prints based on Marc’s original archival sketches, illustrations and paintings; all with a tightly controlled offer of limited edition prints. Each ”founding member” paid an initial membership fee to join, and was then provided with a variety of future offerings officially approved by Marc Davis. Typically the offer would allow for orders to be received until the edition was ”sold out”… and upon purchase, the prints were then to be signed and numbered. Unfortunately, when Marc died in January 2000, the program was ended and the remaining prints were then placed in storage within the Marc Davis estate. Through the years, Marc’s wife, Alice Estes Davis, would offer select unsigned prints to friends and colleagues who had been instrumental in helping to preserve Marc’s legacy for future generations. This piece was later issued in an unsigned, numbered limited edition of 50 prints; none of which were actually signed by the artist. This particular print is one of the very few prints that remained unused and unnumbered; an extreme rarity. The unnumbered print rarely surfaces, and is seldom found today. Also used as a reference piece in development of the final book project developed by Alice Estes Davis in 2014 as a tribute to her late husband. The print was customized to reflect the appearance of an etching, with a unique style that is markedly different than most lithographic projects.
