eBay CIRCA 1910 – 1920 BOXED ”NATIONAL SHARPENER” STROPPER ”FOR SAFETY RAZORS” – MARKED ”PAT APD FOR” This safety razor stropper is marked ”NATIONAL” in old lettering and looks to be circa 1900. It says on both says engraved into the body ”PAT. APD. FOR” – with just ”NATIONAL” and ”PAT APD FOR” engraved on each side. No other markings can be found and no markings are found on the auxiliary stropper blade handle. Main ”NATIONAL” marked unit is made of ALUMINUM and also nickel plated pressed steel, with the ball roller weight likely cast and clearly plated. One the couple others of this ”NATIONAL” we found illustrated on the Internet, strangely, they all had some sort of little lever on one side pictured, but on this one we have here – there is NO LEVER and never was. There was a National Sharpener w/ National Stropper & National Hone by Pike National Metal Products Co., Chicago, IL and Hone Mfg. Pike Co., Pike NH Or this could be the ”NATIONAL” safety razor stropper manufactured by National Razor Mfg. Co., a company which began in 1919 and ended in 1923 – and was located in LISBON, OHIO. But all we could find in the documentation on this company found on the internet was that this company operated from between 1919-1923 and made a straight razor with their name on it but no real proof that it made stroppers for safety razors or even made safety razors at all. No serious rust rust on ”NATIONAL” marked unit – outside of a couple 1/16″ diameter tarnish spots that embody very light surface rust stains. The auxiliary razor hold handle has some minor surface rust which can easily be cleaned off with rust remover if so desired. . But we think it is made by the Pike company. We are not RAZOR STROPPER HISTORIANS or collectors. – so do not know for sure. The box is in good shape, with firm but worn corners and not tattered as is usually found for this form. The stropping stone is not cracked – is in good shape – and also, the stropping leather on the other side of the metal frame is all present but does have a small 1/4″ tear along one edge. THE BOX IS LIGHTLY EMBOSSED ON THE PEBBLE GRAINED PAPER COVERED CARDBOARD LID AS FOLLOWS: ”NATIONAL SHARPENER FOR SAFETY RAZOR BLADES” No other data can be found on the box or on the instrument itself other what has been mentioned. We do know that is a very rare item and is COMPLETE with the accessory stropper handle. If you collect razors, you’ll know how rare this brand is to find.
