Rare Antique 19th Century Nautical Themed ”Jack Tar” Cast Iron Sailor Figural Umbrella StandON SALE 25% OFF For your consideration, a rare cast iron umbrella stand in the form of Jack Tar. Circa Late 19th century. Features a sailor, wearing a broad brimmed hat, standing atop a capstan, and supporting with his hands a hoop in the form of rope work. He stands above various nautical pieces including an anchor, paddle, chain and trunk and Sitting in a recess with the face of Neptune at the front. Height 27-1/2″, Width 17- 1/2″, Deep 12″. No breaks or cracks to the cast iron. Please Not: **Missing bottom drip tray. In 2007 and again in 2009, Christie’s Auction House sold one of these umbrella stands. Christie’s auction estimate for the 2007 auction was $2000-$3000 and it sold for $5400. More recently, they have increased the auction estimate for this stand to $2500-$3500. It sold on March 04, 2012 for $2,185 at a Skinner auction. For comparison purposes, the Skinner auction house example had a substantial amount of damage and rusting being described as ” base cracked in two places where the sailor figure is attached – as a result the figure leans slightly forward” (see last picture).
