1955 Fender Bassman Model 5D6-A Amp Head only Includes: Bassman Amp & Repro Cabinet( Optional – Original Cabinet, Please Message) This is an original 1955 Fender Bassman amp chassis in a repro cabinet. Sam Hutton, an old friend, was one of several cabinet builders inside the Fender Fullerton factory when he worked for Fender building cabinets in the early 1960’s. He built this cabinet for me for the head chassis in the early 1990’s; reason being was to make the amp lighter and more versatile for playing. He also made a repro tube chart but we mis-communicated and he got the model number wrong on the chart. (it’s 5D6 not 5E6) The cabinet is still in excellent plus condition. This 5D6-A model is a dual rectifier model, which was expensive to produce and one reason why Leo Fender & Freddie Tavares changed the circuit the next year into a single rectifier. My amp tech has gone over the amp and it works perfectly. This is mostly original but all caps that needed to be changed were changed by him as you can see in the photos. The second tube from the left (rectifier tube) has a broken tube locator but does not change the operation at all; this is an easy fix. There is extensive rust showing on the chrome control plate and the former owner put labels under the controls since it was hard to read. I had a custom ordered Tiki head cover made for the amp. We have the original four 10” inch speaker cabinet for this chassis but it has sustained termite damage over the years and needs some repair. So is this the 12th one in existence? ”During November 1954, Fender introduced the newly designed 5D6 Bassman amplifier offering four ten inch speakers and was designed utilizing two rectifier tubes. The 5D6 was a major departure from the earlier 5B6 Fender Bassman model. Designed by Freddie Tavares, longtime R&D man at Fender,[2] the new circuit included two rectifier tubes and became known as the Dual Rectifier Bassman.[3][4] Instead of the single 15″ speaker, four 10″ Jensen Alnico P10R speakers were used. The circuit had two innovations: a fixed bias for the power tubes, which increased power in comparison to the earlier cathode bias design, and a cathodyne phase inverter, using half of the 12AX7 tube and allowing a third gain stage on the other half.[5]The first 4×10 Bassman amplifiers started with a batch of prototypes in November and December 1954, model 5D6. No schematic for the 5D6 circuit has ever been found, but Ken Fox and Frank Roy have created a few from originals, and copies are freely available online. Only 11 of these early 5D6 Bassman examples are known to have survived. The lowest serial number known to still exist is 0013 (Frank Roy), 0035 (Albert Talley), 0075 (Jim Cornett), 0077 (Perry Tate), 0089 (Mark Grandfield), 0701, 0745 (Walter Horton), 0769 (Hayes Kolb), 0780 (sold on eBay Nov 2006), 0783, and 0785 (Hayes Kolb) are among those still known to exist.” Serial # 0818 Power Transformer # Triad 7993 Output Tranformer #2820 Can see the last 4 numbers of Vol1. pot says 7625 **It might serve the buyers purpose to bring up the power slowly with a variac since these amp heads are over 50 years old and have not been used for a few decades.
