There are faint oval stamps on title pages and several leaves throughout each volume of the ”Fitzroy Public Library” — presumably, the suburb of Melbourne, Australia. No other library marks — (no marks on the spines or bindings, card pockets, perforated stamps, bookplates, etc.) Two volume set. First edition of each part of this interesting compilation of pieces by Andrew Wynter [1819-1876], who was born in Bristol, but moved to the capitol where he studied medicine at St George’s Hospital and set up a London practice. He edited the British Medical Journal from 1845-60, was awarded an M.D. in 1853 and became a member of the College of Physicians in 1861. Dr. Wynter was also a graceful writer, who published prolifically in many of the magazines of mid-Victorian times — including Ainsworth’s Magazine, the Cornhill Magazine, Fraser’s Magazine, the Edinburgh Review, the Quarterly Review, the London Review, Good Words, and Once a Week. Wynter published books in which many of his contributions to these periodicals were compiled. The first two were published under the not-very graceful pseudonym ”Werdna Retnyw.” Many of Dr. Wynter’s pieces display the same sort of intellectual playfulness and a willingness to look at life and events from a different perspective. As a doctor, Wynter took a special interest in insanity; a substantial part of his practice involved taking wealthy patients as residents at his Chiswick home. A hint of the range and nature of the contents can be gleaned from a partial list of the titles of the essays in the first series: The Post-Office, London smoke, Mock auctions, The suction-post, The India-rubber artist, The Hunterian Museum at the College of Surgeons, Shop-Windows, Aerated Bread, Candle Making, The Nerve system of the Metropolis, London Stout, London Beggars, The Sewing Machine, The Philosophy of Babydom, Brain Difficulties, Human Hair, etc. In the second series, Wynter adds essays on London omnibuses, The water-supply of London, How to buy your own house or land, The Thames Embankment, Dipsomania, or Thirst-madness, Machine Tool-makers, The School of Cookery, A few Words on our Meat, Photo-sculpture, Longevity, A Word about Wines, False Hair: Where it comes From, Our Lifeboats, The Birth of the Steam-engine, The Flesh-worm Disease. This last piece is not light-hearted at all, but a useful account of Trichinosis, which Wynter called trichiniasis — a parasitic disease caused by eating raw or undercooked pork or wild game infected with the larvae of a species of roundworm Trichinella spiralis. At the time of Wynter’s second series (1866), this was breaking news, and he does report the ”recent work and observations in Germany — [A series of experiments conducted between 1850 and 1870 by the German researchers Rudolf Virchow, Rudolf Leuckart and Friedrich Albert von Zenker, who established for the first time the life cycle of the specific roundworm]. There is a piece entitled ”The Human Wasters” — about asylums… a subject about which the author had both knowledge and opinions. A comparison of the two tables of contents shows that there is a substantial piece in each volume on the subject of human hair. For connoisseurs of Victorian oddities and by-paths, there is plenty here for appreciation, but some of the contents are quite serious. First editions of each of the two series.
