Special Sets Are Stacked in Catalogue Order and Shipped Inside a Protective Case MINT NEVER HINGED PALACE OF THE GOVERNORS 1¼c COILS Use this chart to identify the stamps 1054Al Dry Printing Large Holes Turquoise 1054A Dry Printing Small Holes June 17, 1960 2017 BROOKMAN CATALOGUE VALUE IS $10.20 – $13.30 The Auction: This is a SPECIALIZED set of two 1¼ cent definitive stamps FVF and MNH. It contains printing varieties from Scott number 1054A* Palace of the Governors Santa Fe. The turquoise end coils are perf. 10 horiz. *In 2015 Scott changed many Liberty catalogue numbers after a half century. These Scott numbers remain the same. The stamps are from the Liberty Series coil set, which ran from 1954 to 1980. When first issued in 1960, the small hole variety had no legitimate postal usage and were only available from philatelic sales in Washington. The large hole variety was originally only available on precancelled stamps. They were scheduled to be taken off sale December 31 1960. As the supply ran low a small number of leftover large hole stamps (that had not yet been precancelled) were used to fill orders for regular stamps that December only. Nobody realized that the large hole variety existed until after they were gone. Scott does not assign minor numbers for hole size, but catalogs like Brookman use the letter ”l” to denote large holes or ”s” for small holes. We have added the letter l to the number to aid collectors that use Brookman. The large hole variety is much harder to find than the common small hole variety and condition sensitive. The differences between the hole sizes are subtle as shown below. All stamps carry our money back guarantee. Some of these beautiful coils may have very fine centering.
